Yes! The Monarch Butterflies are back in Clearwater, Florida. The caterpillars are abundant. We’ve had 20 healthy butterflies emerge from the chrysalises in out sanctuaries. Those are 20 beautiful beings that weren’t eaten by birds or devoured by spiders or geckos.
We have made many trips to the local nurseries for MORE milkweed. It’s hard to keep up with how ravenous those “hungry” caterpillars are. Just saying makes me smile remembering the children’s book, The Hungry Caterpillar. We are left with bare milkweed stalks in many of the pots. There’s another milkweed run sometime this weekend. The funny things is, many of the new, bushy milkweed plants that we buy to feed our caterpillars also have butterfly eggs on them already. Those freshly hatched caterpillars are busy eaters as well.
It’s a fun passion and gives us a purpose at this point in time to assist the planet in helping a struggling population. If we can release many healthy Monarchs we are doing our part to hopefully increase the population for the future.
